How We Ranked Every PTCGP Booster Pack

With nine expansions released since October 2024, Pokemon TCG Pocket now has a rich and diverse card pool spanning over 2,000 cards. Each expansion has contributed something unique to the game - whether it was introducing game-changing mechanics, iconic Pokemon, stunning full-art cards, or meta-defining competitive cards. In this ranking, we evaluate every booster pack based on four key criteria: meta impact (how much the set changed the competitive landscape), collection value (the quality and beauty of the cards for collectors and binder enthusiasts), card pool depth (the number of playable and impactful cards relative to the set size), and lasting relevance (whether the cards from this set remain useful in the current Paradox Drive meta). We have played through every single expansion, opened hundreds of packs from each set, and battled extensively with and against cards from every era of PTCGP. This ranking reflects our genuine experience with each expansion, from the excitement of launch day through the late-stage meta evolution. Note that this ranking covers full expansions rather than individual pack variants. For example, Genetic Apex includes three pack variants (Charizard, Mewtwo, Pikachu) which we treat as one expansion for ranking purposes. Minor promotional sets like the Holiday 2024 promo packs are not included.

1. Genetic Apex (October 2024) - The Foundation

Genetic Apex is not just the first Pokemon TCG Pocket expansion - it is arguably still the best. Released alongside the game's global launch on October 30, 2024, Genetic Apex set the standard for everything that followed with 286 cards spread across three pack variants: Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu. What makes Genetic Apex so special is how many of its cards remain relevant in May 2026, nearly 18 months after release. The set introduced the core EX Pokemon that defined the game's first year: Charizard EX, whose Continuous Fireball ability lets it reattach energy from the discard pile; Mewtwo EX, which with Gardevoir support became the dominant deck for months; and Pikachu EX, the cornerstone of fast aggressive Lightning decks. Beyond the EX cards, Genetic Apex gave us Professor's Research (draw 2), which remains a staple in virtually every deck today. Sabrina, Potion, and X Speed are also from this set and remain essential Trainer cards. The collection value of Genetic Apex is unmatched. The Immersive Art cards for Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu are among the most beautiful cards in the entire game, with full-screen animations that still impress today. The Crown Rare Charizard EX and Mewtwo EX are the ultimate flex cards for collectors. Genetic Apex also introduced the beloved full-art Trainer cards that have become a signature of PTCGP's visual identity. For beginners, Genetic Apex packs remain the best investment because their cards form the foundation of so many competitive decks. Even in the Paradox Drive meta, a new player opening Genetic Apex packs will immediately build toward playable decks. The set earns the top spot for its unparalleled lasting relevance, its role in establishing the game's identity, and the sheer quality of its card pool.

2. Paradox Drive (May 2026) - The New Standard

Paradox Drive, released just weeks ago on May 1, 2026, has already cemented itself as one of the best expansions in PTCGP history. This set introduced the Ancient and Future subtypes, bringing Koraidon EX, Miraidon EX, and a full supporting cast of Ancient and Future Pokemon that have completely reshaped the competitive meta. What elevates Paradox Drive above other recent expansions is both the power level and the design quality of its cards. The Ancient and Future mechanics are well-designed, creating distinct play styles that feel different from anything that came before. Ancient Pokemon reward you for building a full bench of Ancient allies. Future Pokemon accelerate energy in ways that enable explosive turns. The set also includes beautifully illustrated full-art versions of each Ancient and Future Pokemon, with the Immersive Art Koraidon EX and Miraidon EX ranking among the best-looking cards in the game. Paradox Drive introduces the Ancient Ruins and Future City background illustrations that add environmental storytelling to the card art. For collectors, the set offers several new Crown Rare cards including Koraidon EX and Miraidon EX, plus the first-ever Rainbow Rare Ancient and Future Pokemon. The set also includes highly sought-after full-art Supporter cards featuring the professors from the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games. Paradox Drive's meta impact has been immediate and comprehensive. The Koraidon Ancient and Miraidon Future decks are the two best decks in the game. The set has pushed several older archetypes into retirement while revitalizing others. Paradox Drive earns the number two spot because it represents a genuine evolution of the game's design language while delivering the highest-quality cards of any recent expansion.

3. Space-Time Smackdown (January 2025) - The Power Spike

Space-Time Smackdown, released in January 2025, was the expansion that proved PTCGP was not just a casual mobile game. This Dialga and Palkia themed set introduced several mechanics and cards that dramatically increased the game's competitive depth. The headliners were Dialga EX, whose Time Control ability allows you to take an extra turn after it attacks, and Palkia EX, whose Spatial Rend can hit any Pokemon for 150 damage ignoring the active Pokemon. These cards introduced legendary-level power to PTCGP and required significant strategy to counter. Beyond the legendary duo, Space-Time Smackdown contributed key Trainer cards that remain meta staples. Cyrus, the supporter that forces your opponent to shuffle their active Pokemon into their deck, is one of the most impactful disruption tools in the game. The set also introduced the first wave of Tool cards, including Rocky Helmet (damages attackers) and Choice Band (boosts EX damage), which added a new layer of deck-building decisions. For collectors, Space-Time Smackdown featured stunning Holo Rare and Full Art variants of Dialga and Palkia, plus the first Appearance of the Space-Time Distortion background art that creates a swirling vortex effect behind the Pokemon. The set also featured a special Radiant Collection subset within the expansion, featuring reimagined classic Pokemon cards in a unique art style. Space-Time Smackdown earns the third spot because it elevated PTCGP from a simple card collector into a legitimate competitive TCG, introduced mechanics that the game still builds upon, and featured some of the most powerful legendary Pokemon cards ever printed in a digital format. Its cards remain relevant in the current meta, with Dialga EX seeing play in specific matchup scenarios and Tool cards being universal.

4. Shining Revelry (March 2025) - The Shiny Showcase

Shining Revelry, released in March 2025, was PTCGP's first themed expansion focused entirely on Shiny Pokemon. The set featured over 200 Shiny Pokemon variants, each with the distinctive sparkle animation and alternate coloration that Shiny hunters adore. While Shining Revelry did not introduce game-breaking meta shifts like Space-Time Smackdown or Paradox Drive, it delivered something equally valuable: incredible collection appeal and a genuinely fun competitive environment. The set's centerpiece cards were Shiny Charizard EX (black Charizard), Shiny Rayquaza EX (black Rayquaza), and Shiny Garchomp EX, each available in stunning full-art variants. The set also introduced Shiny Greninja EX and Shiny Metagross EX, both of which found competitive play. For collectors, Shining Revelry is arguably the most visually impressive set in the game. The Shiny sparkle animation applied to every Shiny Pokemon card creates a premium feel that no other set matches. The full-art Shiny variants are among the most desired cards in PTCGP, with Shiny Rayquaza EX fetching high trade values in the trading system. The set also introduced the Shiny Crown Rare cards - Crown Rare Shiny Charizard EX remains one of the rarest pulls in the game with estimated odds of 1 in 3,000 packs. Competitively, Shining Revelry introduced several Shiny Pokemon that found homes in existing archetypes. Shiny Grenadiers EX with its Water Shuriken attack that hits three times for 30 damage each became a viable option in Water-type decks. Shiny Metagross EX with its Steel Shield ability provided excellent defensive utility. While Shining Revelry was not the most impactful competitive set, it delivered on its promise of celebrating Shiny Pokemon and gave collectors a truly special expansion that remains highly regarded. It ranks fourth because of its exceptional collection value and the lasting appeal of its Shiny variants.

5-9: The Remaining Expansions Ranked

Mythical Island (December 2024) takes the fifth spot as the game's first mini-set. With only 68 cards, it was small but impactful. The set introduced Mew EX, whose Genome Hacking attack can copy any attack from your opponent's Pokemon, and Celebi EX, which became the centerpiece of a powerful Grass-type deck alongside Serperior from Genetic Apex. Mythical Island proved that even small sets can have outsized meta impact. Mega Rising (June 2025) ranks sixth. This Mega Evolution themed set introduced Mega Blaziken EX, Mega Swampert EX, and Mega Sceptile EX as the flagship cards. The Mega Evolution mechanic required sacrificing an extra prize point on knockout but granted boosted stats and powerful new attacks. While initially underpowered compared to the Space-Time Smackdown meta, Mega Rising gained relevance over time as support cards from later sets made Mega Evolution more viable. Mega Blaziken EX remains a solid A-Tier deck in the current meta. Triumphant Light (February 2025) ranks seventh. This Arceus-themed expansion was released just one month after Space-Time Smackdown and suffered from comparison to its predecessor. The set introduced Arceus EX and the Light type mechanic, but neither had the lasting impact of Dialga and Palkia. The set did contribute some solid Trainer cards including Quest for Knowledge (supporter that lets you search your deck for any two cards). Pulsing Aura (December 2025) ranks eighth despite being one of the more recent expansions. The Aura-themed set introduced Lucario EX and the Fighting Aura ability, plus several Fighting-type support cards that fed into the eventual Mega Lucario deck. The card art featuring aura effects and energy waves was visually impressive, but the set's narrow type focus limited its overall impact. Fantastical Parade (September 2025) ranks ninth. This ho-Oh themed expansion featuring the Legendary Beasts (Raikou, Entei, Suicune) and Ho-Oh EX was visually gorgeous but mechanically underwhelming. The set failed to introduce any meta-defining decks, and most of its cards were quickly superseded by Pulsing Aura and Paradox Drive. The full-art Ho-Oh EX and Legendary Beast cards are beautiful additions to any collection, but as a competitive set, Fantastical Parade was the weakest link in PTCGP's expansion lineup.
